Ireland’s largest wedge tomb, Labbacallee, is eight km north-west of Fermoy. Wedge tombs form part of four megalithic monuments in Ireland including court tombs, portal dolmens and passage-graves. The Wedge tomb is particular to Ireland and considered the youngest of our Stone Age monuments.

Built in 1314 by William Roche on a rock on the left bank of the River Blackwater to guard a ford at that location. The castle also offers exclusive and private access to five miles of fishing on the Blackwater.

Set on a dramatic outcrop of limestone in the Golden Vale, The Rock of Cashel, iconic in its historic significance, possesses the most impressive cluster of medieval buildings in Ireland.

The house, which replaces a medieval castle of the FitzGerald family on the same site, is a fine classical building that dates from 1799, and it is still occupied by the descendants of the original owners.

Guarding a strategic bridge over the River Blackwater and dominating the town, Lismore Castle, in County Waterford, has been occupied continuously since the twelfth century. Prince John’s ‘castellum‘ became the palace of the mediaeval bishops.

There are two waymarked walking trails in these woods. The Loop Walk and The longer Millennium Trail (7 kms, 2.5 hours, moderate) is particularly beautiful and has many interesting features, including old forest tracks, an enclosed exotic rhododendron canopy, the Mountain Lodge, Galty views and the Burncourt River.

The fine parklands are designed in the naturalistic style of the famous Capability Brown. They include many beautiful water features, plus a parterre walled garden and gardeners’ cottages. There are numerous pathways and graded walks. Lucky visitors might just spot some of the red deer, fallow deer, sika deer and Kerry cattle that live on the estate.
